Alibaba, the ace Nigerian comedian, has expressed his belief
in polygamy, outlining reasons “why a man should have multiple wives”.
The comedian shared his views during a preview of an
upcoming episode of The Clarity Zone podcast.
The 60-year-old veteran, born Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome,
provided several examples of why polygamy persists, adding that in some cases,
the practice is even supported or initiated by wives.
The stand-up comedian argued that some women encourage their
husbands to marry another wife to prevent him from keeping mistresses.
He claimed that some wives go as far as selecting the new
partners themselves.
He also pointed to traditional practices involving widows as
another cause for polygamy.
“Some people feel if it is only one wife, you might not be
able to control the wife. But if the wife knows you have more than one, she
would calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves… So, there are
different reasons for polygamy,” he said.
“I actually know of a woman in Ibadan who encouraged her
husband to be polygamous. Most of them back then, I do not know who wants to
doubt this, the women marry young girls and give to the husband and they do
that because they do not want the man to have concubines.
“You have families where when the brother that marries a
woman dies and she is either just a new wife or has like two children and they
need the children to be taken care of and you do not want her to go to another
family, they call all the brothers and say which of you can take over this girl
and take care of her.
“So if the man already had a wife, that is a cause for
polygamy. As much as people say it is not right, the same person would end up
having three to five children outside.”
When questioned on his stance on polygamy, the comedian, who
is married to one wife, gave a definitive reply: “Yes, I do”.
The comedian married Mary in 2006. The couple welcomed triplets in April 2024 and share five children together.
