What Led to Dismissal of 800 Dangote Refinery Workers

A WhatsApp group meant to organize workers into a union has triggered a seismic fallout at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, leading to the dismissal of 800 employees.

Insiders reveal that the group, created by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), became a platform for sharing confidential operational details, prompting swift and severe action from management.

PENGASSAN reached out to refinery workers, encouraging them to join the union with promises of support and job security.

To coordinate this effort, a WhatsApp group was set up for distributing forms and posting daily updates on refinery operations.

However, management viewed the group as a breach of trust, alleging that members shared sensitive information about the facility’s activities.

“Reports from the refinery were being shared daily. Management saw it as a serious threat and acted quickly,” an insider disclosed.

Executives deemed the behavior disruptive, leading to the abrupt termination of 800 workers in what the company described as a response to a violation of confidentiality.

The mass sacking has ignited tensions, with PENGASSAN accusing Dangote of targeting unionization efforts.

The incident highlights the volatile clash between labor rights and corporate control at Africa’s largest oil refinery, leaving hundreds of workers in limbo and raising questions about the balance of power in Nigeria’s energy sector.
