Students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Enugu Campus staged a protest against a mandatory N30,000 “development levy” imposed by the school authorities, calling it unjustified and poorly explained.
The demonstration, led by the Health Science Students Association (HESSA), erupted after failed dialogues with deans and the provost, culminating at the UNEC main gate.
The levy, introduced in August, was a prerequisite for students to sit for exams, sparking outrage as it added to the existing N104,900 school fees, which already include development charges.
Students from various faculties joined HESSA in solidarity, criticizing the administration’s vague justifications despite multiple meetings seeking clarity.
One student, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration: “We already pay for course registration and other fees. This development levy feels like extortion.”
The protest prompted the school to issue a memo temporarily suspending the levy, allowing exams to proceed without the payment.
While tensions have eased, students remain wary of future levies, with concerns about transparency lingering on campus.
