In a heartbreaking incident in Eligbolo, Obio Akpor, Rivers State, two teenage brothers, Miracle Peter, 17, and Emma Peter, 16, were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to save someone trapped in a deluge.
The sons of 35-year-old Onyinyechi Peter lost their lives in the courageous act.According to a source, the tragedy unfolded when Emma’s slippers were swept away, and as the brothers tried to retrieve them, powerful currents overwhelmed them.
One of the boys’ bodies was recovered near Eliozu Bridge on Sunday morning.Mrs. Peter, whose home was flooded, is currently staying with a neighbor.
Witnesses reported her anguish, noting that onlookers saw her sons struggling but were unable to help due to the fierce current.
Locals attributed the disaster to an overflowing canal along G.U. Ake Road, a recurring cause of flooding in the area.
Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko called the incident “regrettable and pathetic,” adding that investigations are underway to uncover the full circumstances.“I extend my sympathies to the family,” Iringe-Koko said.
