Two Nigerians Emerge as Chairman, Secretary-General of Gas Exporting Countries Forum

In a historic milestone for Nigeria, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has been elected Chairman of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Ministerial Meeting for 2026, while Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Ltd, has been appointed as the Forum’s Secretary-General.

NNPC Ltd hailed the appointments as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and the Federal Government’s Gas Agenda, which prioritizes natural gas as a catalyst for industrial growth and economic development.

Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPC Ltd, announced that Dr. Mshelbila was elected at the GECF’s 27th Ministerial Meeting in Doha, Qatar, succeeding Algeria’s Mohamed Hamel as the fifth Secretary-General of the organization.

The GECF is a global platform advocating for natural gas as a cornerstone of sustainable development.

NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, congratulated Ekpo for his leadership in advancing Nigeria’s gas utilization for industrialization and economic progress.

He also praised Mshelbila for his transformative contributions at Nigeria LNG, where he has driven the conversion of Nigeria’s vast gas reserves into export-grade LNG, LPG, and condensates, meeting both domestic demands and global market needs, thereby cementing Nigeria’s position on the global energy map.

The dual appointments mark a significant achievement for Nigeria, reinforcing its growing influence in the global energy sector and commitment to leveraging gas for sustainable development.
