Nigerian Army troops in Niger State decimated an unspecified number of armed bandits in a high-intensity gun battle along the Tungan-Magajiya–Sabongari road, dealing a significant blow to criminal elements in the region.
The clash, which unfolded at approximately 6 a.m. on October 12, showcased the military’s resolve to curb banditry, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
Sources familiar with the operation revealed that the bandits, arriving in large numbers, initiated a fierce exchange of gunfire with the troops.
However, the military’s superior firepower overwhelmed the assailants, neutralizing several bandits on the spot while others fled, many nursing gunshot wounds.
“The troops held their ground decisively,” one source said, highlighting the effectiveness of the response.
During the encounter, the bandits targeted a military armoured personnel carrier (APC), damaging its four tyres with heavy gunfire. Remarkably, no casualties were reported among the troops, a testament to their tactical discipline and resilience.
The army is now intensifying efforts to track down the fleeing criminals, with operations ongoing to ensure they are brought to justice.
The Tungan-Magajiya–Sabongari axis has been a hotspot for banditry, with armed groups frequently targeting communities and travelers.
This latest operation shows the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring security in Niger State, where banditry and kidnappings have plagued residents.
Local authorities are yet to release an official tally of neutralized bandits, but the military’s swift action has been hailed as a critical step in disrupting criminal networks.
As troops continue their pursuit, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security forces.
The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding communities and dismantling bandit strongholds across the region.
