President Bola Tinubu has officially written to the Senate requesting confirmation for a newly appointed slate of service chiefs, marking a significant overhaul of Nigeria's military leadership amid ongoing security challenges.
The letter, read aloud by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday's plenary session, seeks approval for the following nominees:
Chief of Defence Staff: General Olufemi Oluyede
Chief of Army Staff: Major-General Waheedi Shaibu
Chief of Naval Staff: Rear Admiral Idi Abbas
Chief of Air Staff: Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke
Chief of Defence Intelligence: Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye
In his correspondence, President Tinubu urged the Senate to grant "expeditious consideration" to the appointments, emphasizing their critical role in national defense.
The request has been referred to the Committee of the Whole, with screening and confirmation hearings scheduled for next week.
The reshuffle follows a sudden change in military hierarchy just days ago, when Tinubu removed General Christopher Musa from the position of Chief of Defence Staff.
Oluyede, a former Chief of Army Staff, was immediately elevated to replace him. Notably, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye was retained as Chief of Defence Intelligence, ensuring continuity in that key intelligence role.
Presidential aide Sunday Dare explained the rationale in a statement, attributing the changes to "the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen the national security architecture."
He added that "all appointments take immediate effect," allowing the new leaders to assume duties pending Senate approval.
