President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to immediately review and reduce the 2026 Hajj fares, leveraging the naira’s recent appreciation against the dollar.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, relaying the directive during a Monday meeting with NAHCON’s leadership at the Presidential Villa, gave the commission a two-day deadline to propose affordable fare options.
Shettima stressed the importance of collaboration between federal and state officials, including governors, to finalize and implement the revised fares swiftly.
He also urged stakeholders to expedite payments to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for a seamless pilgrimage process.
Deputy Chief of Staff Ibrahim Hadeija, speaking post-meeting, emphasized that the fare reduction aims to make the pilgrimage more accessible, reflecting the benefits of ongoing economic reforms.
“Last year, pilgrims paid ₦8.5 million to ₦8.6 million when the exchange rate was less favorable. With the naira’s current strength, we expect a significant cost reduction,” Hadeija noted.
NAHCON Secretary Mustapha Mohammad welcomed the move, stating, “Lower fares will enable more Muslims to perform Hajj. We’ll work diligently to achieve the most affordable rates possible.”
Faruk Aliyu Yaro, Chairman of the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board and Deputy Chairman of the Forum of Chief Executives of state pilgrims’ boards, praised the intervention, expressing gratitude for the anticipated cost reduction.
