President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Nigerian Army to deploy a full brigade and heavy equipment to Kwara South and Kwara North to eliminate bandits operating from the state’s forests, following a surge in insecurity.
The operation, part of Operation Fasan Yanma (OPFY), has begun in communities like Oke Ode and Babanla in Ifelodun Local Council, extending to Edu and Patigi to clear forests used by kidnappers for attacks and abductions, according to a statement from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaiye.
The governor praised Tinubu’s swift response to restore peace.In response to recent bandit attacks in Kwara and neighboring Kogi, the Ekiti State Police Command has tightened security at major entry and exit points.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Sunday Abutu said a joint operation with the Amotekun Corps and other agencies aims to prevent criminal infiltration.
He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate, and report suspicious activities, clarifying that the deployment involves only local operatives.
The Senate, addressing the escalating violence in Kwara South, summoned the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede, and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru highlighted 142 kidnappings, over 70 killings, and the desertion of 25 communities in the past year, urging the establishment of a permanent military base in Ifelodun to curb banditry fueled by ungoverned spaces and local informants.
