Residents of Borno and Yobe states are grappling with widespread blackouts after suspected Boko Haram insurgents vandalized a critical power infrastructure, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed on Sunday.
The attack, which targeted a 330kV transmission tower along the Gombe–Damaturu line, marks another in a series of assaults on the region’s electricity network.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, reported that the vandalism occurred at approximately 5:46 p.m. on Friday, when Tower T347’s legs were severed, causing it to buckle.
“Our team discovered the tower’s legs had been cut off, leading to partial power disruption in Maiduguri, Damaturu, and surrounding areas,” Mbah said, noting that thousands of residents are affected.
To mitigate the outage, TCN has redirected power through the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, established during the Buhari administration to address recurring attacks on the region’s grid.
This plant is currently supplying the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, feeding key 33kV feeders in areas like Beneshiek, Damasak, Bama, University Campus, Maiduguri Town, and Monguno.
Damaturu and its environs are temporarily powered via the Potiskum Substation.Mbah stated that TCN engineers are working around the clock to repair the damaged tower and restore normal transmission.
“Our team is on site, committed to reconstructing the tower as quickly as possible,” she said.Condemning the attack as “deliberate sabotage against national development,” Mbah urged citizens to report suspicious activities near power infrastructure to security agencies or TCN offices.
“These assets belong to all Nigerians and must be protected,” she emphasized. The incident underscores ongoing challenges in the North-East, where repeated attacks by insurgents and vandals have disrupted power stability, plunging communities into darkness and hindering development efforts.
