Students Protest in Oyo State to Defend Dangote Refinery Amid Union Tensions

In a vibrant display of solidarity, hundreds of students from various tertiary institutions in Oyo State took to the streets of Ibadan on Tuesday, marching in support of the Dangote Refinery as it grapples with escalating disputes involving oil unions and marketers.

The peaceful demonstration, organized by a coalition including the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), the Coalition of Yoruba Students, and the Yoruba Movement, converged at the Iwo Road Roundabout before proceeding along key routes on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway.

Protesters, clad in matching shirts emblazoned with the slogan "Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery," waved placards bearing messages such as “Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery.”

The rally comes amid heightened tensions following a nationwide strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and other unions, triggered by the dismissal of over 800 unionized workers at the refinery last week.

The unions accused the facility of anti-labor practices, while refinery officials described the layoffs as part of a necessary staff reorganization to combat alleged sabotage.

Security forces, including the Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corps, were on hand to ensure the protest remained orderly, with no reports of clashes.

As the march concluded, participants chanted solidarity songs, emphasizing their demand for swift resolution to allow the refinery to operate at full capacity.

The event has garnered widespread attention on social media, with viral posts amplifying the message of unity in the face of economic challenges.

Dangote Industries Limited is yet to issue an official statement on the student rally.
