The Nigerian Army says Akenleye Femi, a lance corporal of
the 221 Battalion, stationed at Wawa cantonment in Niger state, allegedly
killed his wife before taking his own life.
In a statement on Monday, the army said the incident, which
occurred on October 11, has left residents of the barracks deeply shocked.
Stephen Nwankwo, acting assistant spokesperson for the army,
said Femi and his wife were found dead in their apartment.
He said preliminary investigation showed that the soldier
was on duty but had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal
matters.
“Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were suddenly found dead
in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa
Cantonment,” the statement reads.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier was on
duty within the cantonment, and had sought permission from his superior to
attend to personal needs and return to duty. This followed the discovery of the
dead bodies lying in their apartment.”
Nwankwo said the remains of the deceased have been preserved
as a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances
surrounding the incident.
Ezra Barkins, commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, has
assured the public that the investigation will be comprehensive and its
findings will be made public.
The army expressed deep regret over the loss and extended
condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The army also called for understanding and cooperation from
the public, promising to implement measures to prevent a recurrence.
