Shettima, Akpabio, Abbas Storm Enugu for Gov Mbah, Appointees Defection Ceremony

Enugu State is buzzing with excitement as Governor Peter Mbah and his political appointees formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, marking a significant defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The announcement, made in a statement on Tuesday, follows months of tension within the PDP over its treatment of the South-East region.

Mbah was received into the APC by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and the APC National Working Committee, led by National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside governors, ministers, federal lawmakers, and other party leaders.

The defection ceremony, held in Enugu, drew widespread support from key state stakeholders and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, who hailed Mbah’s move as a bold stand against regional marginalization.

Former Enugu APC chairman Augustine Nnamani, quoted in the statement, blamed the PDP’s internal crisis for the mass exodus, accusing the party of “mistreating and betraying the South-East.”

He pointed to the PDP’s refusal to recognize Sunday Udeh-Okoye as national secretary, defying party tradition, as a key grievance.

“The PDP chose a few Abuja elites over the South-East. Mbah’s exit aligns with the region’s May communique to leave if their choice was disregarded,” Nnamani said.

The statement highlighted the PDP’s decline in the South-East, noting that the party, which once controlled all five states, has now lost significant ground, with Mbah’s departure dealing a major blow.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo praised Mbah, described as one of Nigeria’s top-performing governors, for joining the ruling APC to better serve Enugu’s interests.

The defection comes amid ongoing PDP infighting, which critics argue has weakened its regional influence.

Mbah’s move is expected to reshape Enugu’s political landscape and bolster APC’s foothold in the South-East ahead of the 2027 elections.
