Senator Umeh Slams Lagos Govt Over Trade Fair Demolitions, Calls Action Illegal

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central and a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has fiercely criticized the Lagos State Government’s recent demolitions at the Trade Fair Complex, branding them illegal and a violation of due process.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, October 6, 2025, Umeh accused the state of overstepping its authority by targeting federal property.

Umeh, a fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, emphasized that the Trade Fair Complex is under federal jurisdiction, managed by the Trade Fair Management Board, not the Lagos State Government. “

The country operates under laws and the constitution. The Commissioner for Physical Planning’s justification of this action is a clear breach of law,” he stated, referencing the demolitions that began on September 25, 2025.

He argued that the complex, recorded in the Federal Land Registry in Ikoyi, is outside the state’s control, with the Trade Fair Management Board handling all administrative functions, including approvals and property rates.

“The Lagos State Government has no role there. Their intrusion with heavy machinery to destroy investments without notice is unjustifiable,” Umeh said.

Refuting claims that the demolished structures were built on canals or lacked approval, Umeh insisted that all buildings had been duly authorized by the federal board.

He described the state’s actions as an affront to traders and investors, urging respect for federal authority and legal processes in managing such properties.
