Chairman of the Senate committee on Federal Roads Management Agency Senator Sahabi Ya'u has urged the board and management of FERMA to think outside the box in tackling the challenge of roads maintenance across the country.
This was at the screening of Dr Musa Yahaya as the presidential appointee for Chairman of the board of FERMAThe committee says Nigerians expect improved service delivery on all projects as the Federal Government has shown commitment to road developments.
“Your appointment comes at a time when our roads are a national embarrassment,” Senator Ya’u told Dr. Yahaya.
“The Federal Government has shown unprecedented commitment to road infrastructure. Now, FERMA must match that with creativity, efficiency, and accountability. No more business as usual.”
“Nigerians want roads that last, not seasonal repairs,” Ya’u said. “Use technology, local materials, community participation, whatever works. Think outside the box.”
He pledged to prioritize high-traffic corridors like Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, and the Southeast network, while integrating climate-resilient designs amid rising floods.
The Senate praised President Tinubu’s renewed focus on infrastructure but warned that FERMA’s performance will be under intense scrutiny.“Confirmation is just the beginning,” Senator Ya’u concluded. “Deliver results,or be replaced.”
Dr. Yahaya’s nomination now heads to the full Senate for final approval. If confirmed, he will lead a restructured FERMA board tasked with transforming Nigeria’s road maintenance from reactive patchwork to proactive, world-class engineering.
