Senate Resumes Plenary to Tackle Security, Electoral Reforms

The Senate will reconvene on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after a two-week delay from its original September 23 schedule, with a packed agenda focusing on long-overdue security and electoral reform debates.

The extended recess, which paused critical national discussions, has sparked public concern over stalled progress on pressing issues.

Key items include the National Security Summit, Electoral Act amendments, the Constitution Alteration Bill (2025), and the long-pending National Assembly Budget and Research Office Bill, aimed at enhancing fiscal oversight through independent budget analysis.

An internal memo from Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, confirmed the postponement, citing no specific reason but with sources attributing it to lawmakers’ participation in Independence Day events on October 1.

The delay has heightened public frustration, particularly over the stalled Security Summit, which Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele promised would adopt a grassroots-driven approach to address rising insecurity.

“No amount of infrastructure investment will succeed without peace,” Bamidele emphasized during the summit’s ad hoc committee meeting in June.

The Constitution Alteration Bill, sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi, targets reforms to the 1999 Constitution to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

Akpabio has lauded the 10th Senate’s productivity, noting 844 pieces of legislation considered, including 26 executive bills.
