The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Uyo, deploying operatives to secure the premises amid a leadership tussle within the party.
According to reports on Thursday, the heavy police presence follows heightened tensions over the control of the state PDP leadership, particularly after the tenure of the former executive committee expired.
The crisis escalated when some party members, backed by influential figures, attempted to install a new caretaker committee, prompting protests from supporters loyal to the outgoing leadership.
Police spokesperson ASP Timfon John confirmed the deployment, stating that it was a proactive measure to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
“We are here to ensure peace and protect the facility from any unauthorized access or violence,” John said, urging party members to resolve their disputes amicably.
The situation has drawn reactions from PDP stakeholders, with some calling for dialogue to resolve the leadership vacuum, while others accuse external forces of interfering in the party’s internal affairs.
The police have maintained a neutral stance, emphasizing their role is to maintain security while the party addresses its internal conflicts.
