Northern leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have unanimously endorsed Kabiru Turaki, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, as their consensus candidate for the party’s national chairman position.
The decision was made during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night, attended by key figures including Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum.
The endorsement comes ahead of the PDP’s national convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where new National Working Committee (NWC) leaders will be elected.
The party’s tradition dictates that the national chairman hails from the north, following the PDP National Executive Committee’s decision in August to zone the presidential ticket to the south. However, the convention faces potential disruption.
A lawsuit filed by PDP leaders Austine Nwachukwu (Imo State Chairman), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia State Chairman), and Turnah George (South-South Secretary) at the Federal High Court (FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025) seeks to halt the event.
The plaintiffs, reportedly aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, are challenging the convention’s legality. The court will hear the case on October 31.
