Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said that the performance in office of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the last three years justifies his presentation by the All Progressives Congress as the consensus candidate for next year’s governorship election.
Fayemi lauded Oyebanji for prioritising infrastructure development, particularly road construction and rehabilitation, which he said had improved connectivity, boosted commerce and eased transportation across the state.
The former governor spoke on Saturday at Ijelu-Ekiti during the inauguration of the newly constructed Itapa-Ijelu-Omu Road as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Oyebanji administration.
Fayemi said, “I want to thank our governor for not disappointing us and for holding firm to his God and the truth in delivering the task of governing Ekiti and leaving it better than the way we left it. We have every reason to be proud of him. We have no reason to abandon him.
“The success of Oyebanji’s administration is a validation of his belief in purposeful leadership. The governor’s record of performance in three years has justified the decision of the APC and Ekiti people to present Oyebanji as the consensus candidate for the 2026 governorship election.”
It was earlier reported that the APC adopted Oyebanji as its consensus candidate for the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election.
The party also announced that it is switching its state primary election from a direct primary to a consensus mode.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the change followed the voluntary withdrawal of one of the two cleared aspirants, Mrs Atinuke Omolayo, who pulled out of the race and endorsed Oyebanji as the consensus choice.
Fayemi, who lauded Oyebanji for his development strides, transformative leadership and for building on the legacy of continuity in governance, described the governor as his greatest achievement.
He said, “Absolutely, he is my greatest achievement because I have my own imperfections, but those imperfections he has managed to either correct or reduce.
“God has been kind to us in Ekiti by giving us a governor who can focus on the transformation agenda for the people of Ekiti, and who is not given to unnecessary politicking at the expense of the important issue of development.”
The former governor said that the new roads being constructed and commissioned by Oyebanji in different parts of the state were strategic to Ekiti’s economic growth, as they linked key agriculture, business communities and tourism corridors to major urban centres.
Earlier in his remarks, Oyebanji, who thanked his predecessor for laying a solid foundation that his administration was building on, said his achievements so far were collective efforts of successive administrations that shared a common vision for a prosperous Ekiti.
“I bless God for today, and I am so glad that we are able to finally complete this road. What is happening today speaks to what a people and a state will benefit if there is continuity in government,” he said.
Oyebanji thanked Fayemi for breaking the jinx of continuity in Ekiti State, noting that all road projects started by the Fayemi administration that could not be completed had been finished by his government.
