Oyebanji, APC gov aspirant differ over alleged intimidation

Governor Biodun Oyebanji and a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, have disagreed over allegations of intimidation, harassment, and unlawful arrests of party members ahead of the October 27 APC governorship primary.

Ojo’s campaign organisation on Sunday accused agents of government and some security operatives of targeting his supporters across several communities in a bid to weaken his chances in the forthcoming primary election.

The Chairman of the Kayode Ojo Team, Olukayode Oluyemo, who addressed journalists in Ado Ekiti, alleged that the attacks and arrests were politically motivated and part of a coordinated effort to frustrate the aspirant’s statewide ward tour scheduled to begin on Thursday.

“We express deep concern over the continued, orchestrated arrest, prosecution, and detention of our supporters,” Oluyemo said.

“Several of our members have been picked up on fabricated charges, detained unlawfully, and subjected to intimidation in places such as Igede Ekiti, Otun Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti, and Emure Ekiti.”

He alleged that “a group of political thugs believed to be loyal to Governor Oyebanji” had threatened to disrupt Ojo’s planned 177-ward tour, warning that such actions posed grave danger to intra-party democracy.

The team called for the immediate release of all detained supporters and an independent probe into what it described as “the collusion between government officials, security agencies, and some judicial officers.”

Oluyemo also appealed to the APC national leadership to guarantee fairness and transparency in the conduct of the primaries.

However, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, dismissed the allegations as baseless, describing them as a “media stunt” by a desperate aspirant seeking sympathy ahead of the primaries.

“The allegations are unfounded,” Olatunbosun said. “They are already making excuses for their anticipated failure in the governorship primary. No popular aspirant will accuse the government of intimidation because nothing of such exists. It’s a lie from the pit of hell.”

He added that Ojo’s claims were “a ploy to cover up his unpopularity within the APC,” saying, “Politics is not played on social media or by propaganda. It is played with mutual respect, collaboration, and loyalty to the party.”

The APC governorship primary to select the party’s flagbearer for the June 20, 2025 election will hold on October 27. Governor Oyebanji, seeking a second term, will face Kayode Ojo and Mrs Atinuke Oluremi at the polls.
