Despite No Arms Surrender, Public fury has gripped Katsina State following reports that Engr. Sagir Tanimu, Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area (LGA), attended a wedding ceremony for the children of notorious bandits deep in a forest, weeks after a controversial peace pact that failed to secure the surrender of weapons.
The event, held in Kadawan Dandume village—a community recently reconciled with authorities after years of violent clashes—has sparked accusations of legitimizing criminal activities.
According to multiple reports, Tanimu was all smiles as he joined Fulani residents and bandit families for the celebration, accompanied by high-profile figures including Alhaji Ibrahim Bello Kogo, the Prince of Kogo Emirate and emirate representative, as well as the District Head of Sabuwa and other traditional leaders.
Photos circulating online show the chairman in cheerful poses amid the festivities, fueling widespread condemnation on social media and among residents.
The incident comes amid ongoing peace initiatives in Katsina, a state plagued by banditry, kidnappings, and cattle rustling.
In September 2025, Sabuwa LGA, alongside neighboring Dandume, facilitated a peace agreement with armed groups during a meeting in Dugun Muazu village.
Tanimu was present at that dialogue, which aimed to curb violence but notably did not require bandits to renounce their crimes or hand over arms.
Authorities have described these talks as part of broader efforts to restore calm in volatile areas like Jibia, Batsari, and Safana, where similar pacts have yielded mixed results.
A resident of Sabuwa, speaking anonymously to reporters, expressed deep concern: "Attending such events without concrete disarmament sends a wrong signal that government officials are legitimizing their activities."
Katsina State officials is yet to issue an official response to the backlash, but the development coincides with intensified peace brokering in other troubled LGAs like Kurfi and Matazu.
