Abia State Governor Alex Otti has expressed strong optimism that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will soon be released from custody, citing ongoing high-level engagements with President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Friday during President Tinubu's one-day working visit to Abia, represented by Minister of Works David Umahi Otti addressed calls for Kanu's release from Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South).
"I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr President. He is favourably disposed to it, and I am sure that in no distant future, Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom," Otti stated, underscoring the president's positive stance toward a resolution.
Umahi echoed the sentiment, revealing that South-East governors, alongside senators, House members, and ministers, are actively pursuing a political solution to Kanu's case.
"I want to assure Senator Abaribe and Governor Otti that the governors of the South-East are working very seriously... With the love of the president for the South-East, a peaceful resolution will come to pass," he said, emphasizing the need for residents to remain law-abiding.
Kanu, arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and extradited to Nigeria on terrorism charges, has been in Department of State Services (DSS) custody since.
His trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja has dragged on, with recent rulings rejecting no-case submissions and ordering his defense to open.
The case has fueled separatist tensions in the South-East, where IPOB's agitation for Biafra independence persists amid insecurity and economic woes.
