A former spokesman for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, on Thursday said Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is not interested in pursuing his terrorism trial.
Akande stated that Kanu is more focused on seeking a
political solution to his long-standing trial.
He disclosed this during a discussion on Channels
Television’s Sunrise Daily, shortly after Kanu declared his intention to defend
himself before Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court.
Kanu made the decision after his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi,
withdrew from the trial.
However, Akande said: “It’s clear that Kanu is not
interested in pursuing this case because the behavior and conduct of himself
and his lawyers after they have said they want a prompt trial and you have a
judge ready to do the right thing and then this is what you people are working
out, you want to represent yourself? That tells me that he’s not interested in
pursuing the case in court.
“He is interested in a political solution and it does have a
bit of credit, there are people who have behaved like Kanu and their cases were
settled in a political way.
“So I guess that is what he’s more interested in. If you
look at the trajectory of the case, part of the reason it has taken this long
is because of some of these shenanigans on the side of the government and his
own side, changing lawyers back and forth.
“I think that we need to explore the political solution not
because I don’t believe that Kanu should get his day in court but clearly, Kanu
is being drawn out and I think for the sake of our national cohesion, we need
to look at solving this matter politically.”
