Omowunmi, the widow of Mohbad, has reacted to reports that the legal counsel representing her father-in-law Joseph Aloba has withdrawn from the proceedings of their paternity dispute.
In a series of posts via her Instagram Story on Wednesday,
Wunmi alleged that the lawyer’s withdrawal is linked to Aloba’s attempts to
manipulate the DNA test results.
The paternity dispute has been a central issue since
Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
The singer passed away after receiving an injection from an
auxiliary nurse, leading to a public outcry that prompted the police to exhume
his body for an autopsy.
However, in a significant setback in May 2024, the
pathologist revealed that the cause of death could not be determined due to
body decomposition.
Throughout this period, Aloba has insisted that a DNA test
must be conducted to prove the paternity of Liam, his grandson, before the
singer could be reburied.
In September, a magistrate’s court in Ikorodu, Lagos,
granted his request, ordering the test to be carried out at a
government-approved facility.
Wahab Shittu, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), recently
withdrew his chamber’s participation from matters connected to the DNA test
between Mohbad and Liam.
In a statement signed by the head of chambers, the office
said the decision became necessary in view of the “sustained falsehood being
orchestrated in the social media about alleged attempts to compromise the
outcome of the DNA process”.
Reacting to the report, Omowunmi alleged that Aloba, having
secured the court order for the DNA test, is actively working to frustrate and
manipulate the process.
“Another lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has
withdrawn from the DNA case. To my father-in-law, you can get as many lawyers
as you want from anywhere in the world; one thing that’s certain is that you
can’t manipulate this DNA. I’m sorry,” she wrote.
She positioned herself as fully compliant with the legal
process, contrasting her cooperation with Aloba’s alleged obstruction.
“Another lawyer gone. A whole SAN. When people are confident
in truth, they don’t run. They don’t hide. They don’t switch lawyers every
month. They don’t ignore court calls,” she added.
“We have cooperated from Day 1. We have never opposed a DNA
test. We showed up. We waited. We followed the law.
“The only people delaying this process are the same people
who requested it.
“No one can manipulate the court, and no one can manipulate
science. Let the truth speak – for Liam, for Mohbad, and for justice. Again.
“To anyone wondering why their lawyers keep going, here is a
clear voice note from my father in-law’s close associates, I’m patiently
waiting for the lawyer who’s gonna try to dispute or tamper with the DNA
evidence about my child.”
