The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has strongly refuted claims of a coup attempt against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, labeling the allegations as baseless and malicious.
In a statement released by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ clarified that the cancellation of the 65th Independence Anniversary parade was not linked to any coup plot but was instead a strategic decision to allow President Tinubu to attend a crucial bilateral meeting abroad and to enable the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to maintain focus on combating terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ addressed a misleading report by an online publication that falsely connected the parade cancellation to an alleged coup attempt and referenced the recent arrest of sixteen officers for professional misconduct.
The statement emphasized that these claims were intended to sow distrust and tension among Nigerians.
The DHQ further clarified that the investigation into the sixteen officers is a routine internal process to uphold discipline and professionalism within the military, with an investigative panel already constituted to release its findings publicly.
Reassuring the public, the DHQ urged citizens to ignore the misinformation and continue supporting security efforts.
It reaffirmed the AFN’s loyalty to the Constitution and the federal government under President Tinubu’s leadership, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of the government, legislature, and judiciary for the nation’s safety and development.
The DHQ called on Nigerians to remain united and dismiss the falsehoods spread by those seeking to undermine the country’s stability.
