Man Sets Ex-Lover Ablaze in Ibadan Military Barracks Over Relationship Oath Dispute

A man identified as Lawal Faruq has been apprehended by authorities for allegedly dousing his former partner, Omolola Hassan, with petrol and setting her on fire at the bustling Mami Market within Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, Oyo State, in a violent outburst reportedly triggered by the collapse of their relationship.

The horrific incident, which unfolded late Tuesday evening, sent shockwaves through the military community.

Eyewitnesses recounted that Faruq, enraged over Hassan’s decision to end their relationship, confronted her at the market a popular hub for soldiers and civilians before carrying out the attack.

“He poured fuel on her and struck a match, screaming about a promise they made,” said a trader who requested anonymity, adding that the suspect claimed both had sworn an oath never to part ways.

Swift intervention by military personnel at the scene prevented a worse tragedy. Soldiers doused the flames engulfing Hassan and rushed her to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo, where she is receiving intensive care for severe burns.

Hospital sources described her condition as critical but stable, with burns covering significant portions of her body. “She’s a fighter, but the next 48 hours are crucial,” a medical staffer disclosed.

Faruq, now in custody at the military police detention facility in Odogbo Barracks, is undergoing interrogation as authorities piece together the motive and circumstances.

Preliminary investigations suggest the attack stemmed from a personal dispute, with Faruq allegedly citing a traditional or spiritual oath as justification.

“He kept saying she broke their bond, that they were tied by something sacred,” a security source revealed, noting that such claims are being probed for credibility.

The Oyo State Police Command, working alongside military authorities, confirmed the arrest and assured a thorough investigation.

“This is a heinous act, and we will ensure justice is served,” said SP Adewale Osifeso, the state’s police spokesperson, urging calm among residents.
