Kano community raises the alarm over increasing bandit attacks

The Farin-Ruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State has appealed to the Federal Government to intervene urgently following persistent attacks by bandits allegedly coming from neighbouring Katsina State.

The community leader and chairman of the security committee of Farin-Ruwa, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, made the appeal during a press conference in Kano on Thursday evening.

Bagobiri said that repeated attacks on the town and surrounding villages had claimed several lives and led to the loss of property and livestock.

The affected villages, he said, include Farin-Ruwa, Kuraku, Gorantuse, Saure, and Shadu.

“We are here to lodge our complaint to the Federal and Kano State Governments so they can come to our aid over the worsening security situation,” Bagobiri said.

He explained that during recent attacks, many people were killed while no fewer than 1,600 cows and several other valuables were stolen.

“We are calling on President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to come to our aid, as many residents have begun relocating to Kano and other places for safety,” he added.

According to him, the bandits usually invade the villages at any time of the day — morning, evening, or night — and operate freely without resistance.

“Even yesterday and the day before, the bandits attacked again, injuring several people and stealing more than 40 cows, besides other animals and properties,” he said.

Bagobiri further revealed that one recently kidnapped resident paid a ₦15 million ransom to regain freedom.

He lamented that security personnel deployed to the area were grossly inadequate, noting that the attackers stormed the villages on about 50 motorcycles during Wednesday’s raid.

He appealed to the Kano State Government to work closely with security agencies to address the growing insecurity and urged lawmakers representing Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency to intensify their efforts.

“We also call on our senator and the Federal lawmaker representing Bagwai/ Shanono federal Constituency to also do something, even though they are trying their best,” he added.
