The terrorism trial of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was abruptly stalled on Thursday after he sacked his entire legal team, led by Kanu Agabi (SAN), just hours before he was scheduled to open his defence.
When the case resumed before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Agabi announced the withdrawal of himself and five other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs): Onyechi Ikpeazu, Joseph Akubo, Paul Erokoro, Emeka Etiaba, and one other.
“The defendant has taken this case back from us and we respect that,” Agabi stated.Kanu, appearing in the dock, confirmed the dismissal and declared his readiness to represent himself.
Justice Omotosho ordered all remaining members of the former legal team, except the SANs, to vacate the courtroom immediately.
The judge then directed Kanu to begin his defence. Kanu immediately challenged the court’s jurisdiction to continue the trial, but was overruled.
At that point, Onyechi Ikpeazu intervened, noting that the withdrawal took effect Thursday morning.
He urged the court to grant Kanu time “to gather his thoughts and compose himself.”The prosecution raised no objection.
Justice Omotosho subsequently adjourned the case to Friday, October 24, 2025, for Kanu to formally open his defence.
