Interior Minister Lauds Kuje Prison for Progress in Inmate Education, Rehabilitation

During an unscheduled visit to the Kuje Custodial Centre, the Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, praised the facility’s remarkable progress in fostering inmate education and rehabilitation.

The centre has made significant strides, producing seven graduates in 2025, including six master’s degree holders, with a PhD student and five others set to graduate soon.

Through a partnership with the National Open University (NOUN), Kuje currently supports 45 undergraduates, while 201 inmates nationwide pursue degrees in fields like computer science, political science, law, peace studies, criminology, and Christian theology.

Additionally, over 190 inmates in Kuje and Suleja are enrolled in NABTEB and NECO programs.

The minister highlighted the collaborative efforts of the government, private sector, civil society, and professional bodies like the Nigeria Bar Association and the Nigerian Institute of Building, which have provided inmates with opportunities for personal growth.

The centre’s advanced clinic recently facilitated a successful surgery for an inmate, showcasing improved healthcare access within the facility.

Beyond academics, Kuje offers skill acquisition programs in tailoring, shoemaking, painting, and soap making to support rehabilitation and societal reintegration.

The facility now boasts standard classrooms, a renovated counseling unit, clean worship centres, and upgraded recreational spaces, creating an environment conducive to learning and well-being.

These efforts align with the government’s broader initiative to decongest and improve correctional facilities.

In 2023, approximately 600 million naira was raised from the private sector to pay fines for over 4,000 inmates, reducing congestion by 5%.

The minister emphasized that Kuje’s transformation marks a significant departure from past challenges, setting a model for correctional reform.
