Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu's nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), held a closed-door meeting with Basheer Lado, the President's Special Adviser on Senate Matters, on Wednesday, as final preparations intensify for his Senate confirmation hearing scheduled for today.
The rendezvous, captured in photographs circulating widely on social media, took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and underscores the high-stakes choreography behind Amupitan's ascension to lead Nigeria's electoral body.
Sources familiar with the discussions described the session as a routine briefing on procedural expectations, allowing the 58-year-old legal scholar to align with administration priorities ahead of the grilling by senators.
"It was a standard courtesy call to ensure seamless coordination," one insider confided, emphasizing Amupitan's apolitical credentials as a key talking point.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, was nominated by Tinubu on October 9, 2025, following the end of Professor Mahmood Yakubu's decade-long tenure.
The National Council of State unanimously endorsed his candidacy the same day, praising his integrity, impeccable academic record, and status as the first North-Central nominee specifically from Kogi State for the role.
The Senate's Committee on INEC and Other Matters, chaired by Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue), is set to convene the screening at 10 a.m. in the National Assembly Complex, where Amupitan will field questions on restoring public trust in elections marred by controversies under Yakubu, including the disputed 2023 polls.
