INEC acting chair holds first meeting with party chiefs

The Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, May Agbamuche-Mbu, on Tuesday met with chairmen and secretaries of political parties at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting is part of a series of stakeholder consultations ahead of the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November, as reported by Channels TV.

Details of the session are not immediately known.

The meeting is designed to allow INEC and party officials to thrash out grey areas, fine-tune logistics, and strengthen collaboration to ensure a smooth electoral process.

This marks the first meeting presided over by Agbamuche-Mbu since she took over on October 7.

She succeeded Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on a terminal leave.

The transition was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners held last Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, Yakubu explained that he was stepping down in accordance with Section 306, Subsections 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Agbamuche-Mbu will act as INEC chair until the National Assembly confirms Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, who was approved as the new chair by the National Council of State last week.
