A significant security presence was observed at the Lekki Tollgate area of Lagos State on Monday morning as Nigeria marked the fifth anniversary of the #EndSARS protest memorial.
Armed police operatives and other security personnel were stationed around the tollgate and its adjoining routes, with patrol vans positioned strategically in the area.
The #EndSARS memorial, held annually, commemorates the Nigerian youths who protested against police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020, demanding an end to the abuses of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Previous memorials have seen similar heavy security deployments, often leading to tensions and arrests in past years.
