Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas is on the verge of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move his Special Adviser on Political Matters and Special Duties, Josiah Kente, has confirmed would supercharge the state's access to federal resources and infrastructure projects.
Kente's revelation, issued in a statement from Jalingo on Tuesday, frames the anticipated realignment not as a pursuit of personal or partisan gain, but as a "strategic step" rooted in the "collective aspiration of the people of Taraba for sustainable progress, infrastructural transformation, and inclusion in national affairs."
Elected on the PDP ticket in 2023, Kefas's prospective switch would shatter the party's 26-year iron grip on the state since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, marking a dramatic end to its dominance in this PDP stronghold.
The adviser highlighted Kefas's "exceptional leadership and courage" since assuming office, pointing to tangible gains in education, healthcare, and infrastructure under the governor's "Moving Forward" agenda.
However, Kente argued that these initiatives could achieve far greater impact through closer synergy with the APC-led Federal Government, which has prioritized development in aligned states.
"With the Governor’s alignment to the ruling party, Taraba stands to benefit from increased federal presence such as roads, bridges, hospitals, and power installations which are currently concentrated in states with stronger federal ties," Kente stated, emphasizing new channels for federal projects, enhanced security cooperation, and donor-funded interventions.
This comes amid growing calls from individuals, youth groups, and opinion leaders urging Kefas to join the APC, a sentiment echoed in recent high-level consultations, including the governor's meeting with APC youth stakeholders in Abuja earlier this week.
Kente urged Taraba's diverse stakeholders to "rally behind the governor in what he described as a 'realignment for growth and prosperity,'" transcending party lines in favor of the people's welfare.
