Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has taken a significant step toward addressing the plight of retirees by inaugurating a reconstituted Pension Committee tasked with ensuring fairness, transparency, and the prompt settlement of long-standing pension arrears.
The ceremony, held on September 30, 2025, at the State Secretariat Complex in Yola, was conducted on the governor’s behalf by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Auwal Tukur.
The initiative showcases the Fintiri administration’s commitment to alleviating the financial hardships faced by retired civil servants, many of whom have waited years for their pension entitlements.
To support this effort, Governor Fintiri approved N8 billion for pension liabilities, with N5 billion allocated for state pensioners and N3 billion designated for retirees across Adamawa’s 21 local government areas.
Speaking at the inauguration, Tukur emphasized that payments would adhere to a “first retired, first served” policy to ensure equity and eliminate favoritism.
He praised the efforts of the previous committee and expressed confidence in the newly appointed team, led by Engineer Benson Jelani.
“The selection of committee members was based on their competence and proven track records,” Tukur noted.
“Under Engr. Jelani’s leadership, we are confident this committee will deliver with diligence and integrity.”
In his remarks, Jelani expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for the trust placed in the committee and vowed to carry out its mandate with fairness and accountability.
“We assure His Excellency and the people of Adamawa that we will execute our duties without fear or favor,” he said.
The reconstitution of the Pension Committee comes at a critical time, as Nigeria grapples with widespread pension reform challenges.
Many states face significant backlogs in pension payments, leaving retirees in financial distress.
Adamawa’s proactive approach, backed by substantial funding, signals a commitment to improving the welfare of its retired workforce and sets a potential model for other states.
The committee is expected to begin work immediately, prioritizing the swift and transparent disbursement of funds to bring relief to thousands of retirees across the state.
