Gov Bala Mohammed Signs Law for 29 New LGAs, Seeks National Assembly Ratification

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on October 28, 2025, signed into law a bill creating 29 additional local government areas (LGAs), bringing the state's total from the constitutionally recognised 20 to 49 to serve its estimated 10 million population.

The legislation, passed by the Bauchi State House of Assembly, has been forwarded to the National Assembly for ratification as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

In a letter dated the same day, Acting Deputy Clerk Musa Yerima informed Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, of the development.

“The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into Law a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025,” Yerima wrote.

He noted that the new LGAs remain “inchoate” until the National Assembly enacts consequential provisions under Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution.

“The said Law is forwarded for further necessary action,” the letter concluded, citing compliance with Section 100(3) of the Constitution.

The move aims to enhance grassroots governance and development in Nigeria’s sixth most populous state.Related Development:

Human rights lawyer and 2027 Oyo governorship aspirant Niyi Aborisade has reiterated the feasibility of local government autonomy, countering former Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola’s earlier claim that it is unrealistic.

Speaking months ago, Aborisade lamented governors’ overreach into LGA functions and hailed the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling as a landmark for true grassroots independence.

“Autonomy is achievable with political will—it’s essential for development at the local level,” he said.
