The Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday arraigned four men before the Federal High Court in Abuja for their alleged roles in the brutal murder of Hon.
Remi Abass, the former Chairman of Irewole Local Government Area in Osun State, in a case that has spotlighted rising political violence and insecurity in Nigeria’s South-West.
The suspects—Abubakar Kabiru (alias Jeje, 38), Tajudeen Opeyemi (30), Akeem Agbomojo (28), and Akintoye Olayemi (40)—faced Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on a three-count charge of terrorism, illegal firearms possession, and murder.
Abass, a prominent local politician, was killed on February 17, 2024, in Ikire, Osun State, in an attack that shook the community and drew condemnation from state authorities.
According to the charge sheet, Count One accused the quartet of conspiring, aiding, and instigating acts of terrorism across various towns and villages in Osun State, an offence punishable under Section 26(1)(2)(a)(b)(c) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Count Two alleged they illegally possessed three pump-action rifles, violating Section 3 of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, 2004.
Count Three charged them with the murder of Abass, contravening Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Act, 2004.
Prosecutors detailed a coordinated plot, claiming the suspects targeted Abass in a violent ambush linked to political rivalries, though specifics remain under wraps pending trial.
Police sources revealed the arrests followed months of intelligence work, with the rifles recovered during a raid in Ikire.
All four defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read. Justice Abdulmalik, noting the gravity of the accusations, ordered their remand at Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja and adjourned the case to December 4, 2025, for a full hearing, aligning with a timeline agreed upon by prosecution and defense counsel.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who had offered a N10 million bounty for information on Abass’s killers in February 2024, hailed the arraignment as a step toward justice.
“No one is above the law. We will ensure those responsible face the full consequences,” he said in a statement.
