A fierce fire tore through Bariga Market in Lagos on Wednesday, razing 26 keeklamp shops and causing property losses worth millions of naira, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported, thanks to the swift response of emergency teams that prevented the blaze from engulfing other parts of the bustling market.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, LASEMA detailed the scale of the destruction, noting, “The fire affected twenty-six (26) keeklamps shops within the market, with properties worth millions of naira lost to the fire.
No loss of life. No injuries sustained.” The agency highlighted the rapid intervention by emergency responders, whose coordinated efforts were instrumental in containing the fire before it could spread further.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated in one of the shops, rapidly spreading to adjacent stalls due to the wooden frameworks supporting and partitioning the keeklamp structures.
“Further information received at the incident scene revealed that the fire started from one of the shops and quickly spread to other shops because the keeklamps shops were supported and partitioned by wooden frameworks,” LASEMA explained.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials yet to pinpoint its origin. The agency praised the collaborative efforts of emergency personnel, stating, “The fire was immediately extinguished thanks to the coordinated efforts of all emergency personnel on site.”
LASEMA confirmed that the situation is now fully under control, with firefighting operations concluded and dampening-down measures completed to prevent re-ignition.The incident has left traders grappling with significant losses, as the destroyed shops housed goods valued at substantial sums.
Authorities are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damages in the coming days and issue recommendations to enhance safety protocols at the market.
This could include stricter regulations on building materials and fire prevention measures to mitigate future risks.
Bariga Market, a vital economic hub in Lagos, has faced similar incidents in the past, underscoring the challenges of managing fire risks in densely packed markets with makeshift structures.
Local traders have called for government support to rebuild and implement safer infrastructure.
As investigations continue, LASEMA has urged market stakeholders to remain vigilant and adopt fire safety practices to prevent such devastating losses in the future.
