Wale Edun, Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has been elected the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF).
The Minister, who is a well-known boxing enthusiast and former amateur champion, was reportedly elected unopposed at the federation's elective congress held in Abuja on Saturday. He secured all 12 votes cast by the delegates.
Mr. Edun’s emergence marks a significant development for the NBF, given his dual role in government and his long-standing commitment to the sport, particularly through his role as the Chairman of the non-profit Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF), an organization founded to nurture amateur boxing talent.
In a competitive race for the Vice President position, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, the Southwest representative, defeated his counterpart from the North Central zone, Mighty Mike, by a vote count of eight to four.
Stakeholders have expressed excitement, viewing Edun’s election as a new dawn for Nigerian boxing, with expectations high for transparency, structural reforms, and renewed grassroots development to restore the sport's global prominence.
