FG to Provide Affordable Housing for Low-Income Nigerians - Ministers

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced that the Federal Government is rolling out initiatives to make housing affordable for low-income Nigerians, ensuring costs do not exceed one-third of a person’s income.

Speaking at the 4th Amadeo Business Summit 4.0 in Enugu on Thursday, themed “Thriving In Times Like These,” Dangiwa outlined plans for a new financial architecture under the National Social Housing Fund to enhance affordability.

Dangiwa revealed that the government is establishing building materials manufacturing hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to stabilize prices, create jobs, and reduce reliance on imports.

“These hubs are tangible steps toward economic inclusion and national renewal, ensuring citizens build with proudly Nigerian materials,” he said.

To drive systemic reform, the ministry has partnered with the Know This Nigeria Network to launch the Renewed Hope National Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign.

The initiative, set to begin in Katsina State later this month and expand nationwide, aims to bridge federal and state efforts, advocate for land reforms, and deepen homeownership.

Dangiwa noted that the campaign will establish permanent advisory structures to help state governments and housing institutions leverage federal and international opportunities.

The minister highlighted ongoing projects, including over 10,000 homes being built as serviced communities where families can live, work, and thrive.

Additionally, the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme will transform over 150 neglected communities into livable neighborhoods with improved roads, drainage, water, and sanitation.

Chinenye Anosike, Acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, emphasized resilience and innovation in addressing fiscal challenges.

She said the bank is modernizing systems and leveraging technology to enhance customer experience and ensure efficient service for National Housing Fund contributors.

Anosike noted that 137,000 Nigerians have accessed products like NHF mortgage loans and home renovation loans.

Keynote speaker Dr. Femi Adewale urged greater creativity in mortgage products and collaboration between the Federal Mortgage Bank and other financiers to improve affordability.

Summit convener Dr. Ugochukwu Chime said the event aimed to equip business leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs with tools to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

Dangiwa’s announcements signal a robust push toward inclusive housing, economic growth, and sustainable urban development in Nigeria.
