FG Reconstitutes Negotiation Committee to Avert ASUU Strike

In response to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) signaling its intent to launch a nationwide strike next week, the Federal Government has swiftly reconstituted and inaugurated the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed Federal Government Tertiary Institutions Expanded Negotiation Committee.

The move aims to streamline discussions with academic and non-academic unions across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, announced the development in a statement on Tuesday.

The committee will hold its first meeting on October 7 at 2 pm.Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, joined by Labour and Employment Minister Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi and Minister of State for Education Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmed, emphasized that the committee will unify negotiation efforts under a single, inclusive framework.

“The committee’s diverse membership ensures representation across the education sector, leaving no group behind,” Dr. Alausa stated, noting that a well-equipped secretariat will support its work.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given full backing to expedite fair and swift negotiations, with a directive to keep students in school.

“This is renewed hope in action,” Dr. Alausa said, urging unions to engage promptly with the committee.

Labour Minister Dingyadi praised the inclusive approach, stressing that excluding any party undermines progress.

He urged the committee to mediate impartially, fostering transparency and mutual understanding to prevent future industrial actions.

Committee Chairman Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed pledged to approach the task with openness and integrity, aiming for practical, sustainable agreements that promote long-term peace and productivity in tertiary institutions.
