The Federal Government has launched a major intervention to address Nigeria’s food crisis, distributing essential farm inputs to farmers in Akure, Ondo State, as part of efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and stabilize food availability, according to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari.
Speaking on Monday at the distribution event, Mr. Kyari, represented by the Ministry’s Director of Extension, Ayodele Olawumi, outlined the government’s commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which declared food security a national priority with a State of Emergency on Food Security in July 2023.
“The Tinubu administration is resolute in transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector, with food security as a central pillar,” he said.
The initiative includes a range of programs aimed at tackling challenges hindering national food security goals.
Kyari highlighted economic reforms designed to boost productive capacity, create jobs, and reduce living costs.
The distribution of farm inputs, such as Pesti Zyme, knapsack sprayers, water pumps, high-pressure sprayers, power tillers, dehydrators, and Ultimax Plus, is part of a short-term strategy to make quality inputs affordable and accessible to farmers under a transparent system.
“These interventions are designed to increase food production, ensure price stability, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Kyari added, emphasizing the government’s thorough review of existing programs to align them with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s core mandates.
Ondo State Coordinator of the Ministry, Sunday Ojo, underscored the initiative’s focus on empowering smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of the state’s economy.
“This support will boost yields, enhance resilience, and improve livelihoods, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s food basket,” Ojo said.
He urged beneficiaries to utilize the inputs judiciously to justify the government’s investment.
The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and the Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) praised the Federal Government’s efforts, with stakeholders noting the timely intervention amid rising food prices.
Farmers expressed optimism that the inputs would enhance productivity and help mitigate the ongoing food crisis.
The Akure event marks a significant step in the government’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural resilience and ensure food security for all Nigerians, with similar interventions expected to roll out across other states.
