FG Disburses ₦2.3bn to Settle Salary, Promotion Arrears to Federal Universities

The Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to clear outstanding Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff in federal universities nationwide, with payments expected to reflect in beneficiaries’ accounts immediately.

The disbursement, processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), was confirmed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the release as a demonstration of the Tinubu Administration’s resolve to honour inherited financial obligations and enhance welfare in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

“The payment of these arrears underscores our commitment to resolving long-standing issues affecting staff morale and productivity,” Dr. Alausa said.

He revealed that the Ministry of Finance and the OAGF are in the final stages of releasing third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), with completion imminent.

In a major policy shift, the Federal Government has approved the full mainstreaming of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) into university staff salaries effective 2026, ensuring regular and sustainable disbursements without delays.

Additionally, funds have been released under the revitalization component of the Needs Assessment for Nigerian Universities, with budgetary allocations secured for the program’s continuation.

Dr. Alausa commended the Yayale Ahmed Negotiating Committee for its ongoing role in fostering constructive dialogue between the government and tertiary education unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

The latest payment brings the government closer to fully clearing promotion and salary backlogs, a recurring grievance that has triggered industrial actions in the past.
