FG Appoints Prof. Farouk Haruna as Pioneer VC of Federal Varsity of Education, Kontagora

The Federal Government of Nigeria has appointed Professor Farouk Haruna as the inaugural substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Kontagora (FUEK) in Niger State, marking a pivotal milestone for the newly upgraded institution.

The announcement, made by Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman Professor Francis Faduyile, follows a competitive selection process and signals the university's readiness to advance its mission in teacher education.

FUEK, originally established as a College of Education, was elevated to full federal university status through an Act of Parliament in 2021.

It officially began operations and admitted its first students in March 2025, positioning it as one of Nigeria's fastest-growing institutions focused on teacher training.

Professor Haruna, who previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Provost, and Chairman of the Committee of Provosts, emerged victorious from a pool of six shortlisted candidates after a rigorous evaluation by the Governing Council during its fifth meeting in Kontagora.

Faduyile praised Haruna's extensive experience, stating, “Professor Haruna brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role.”

He highlighted the university's strengths, including a robust faculty of Ph.D. holders and state-of-the-art learning facilities, while addressing concerns about the region's security.

“I have visited Kontagora several times—it is peaceful, and people live and work there without fear. The university environment is safe and conducive for students,” Faduyile assured.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago extended his congratulations via Chief Press Secretary Bologi Ibrahim, hailing Haruna as “a seasoned scholar” whose appointment is “deserving and apt.”

Bago expressed optimism about Haruna's “capacity, competence, and track record of innovative and transformative leadership,” adding, “He will move the institution to an enviable height.”

The governor commended the Federal Government for the decision and pledged state support to ensure the university's success, fostering potential collaborations for academic and infrastructural growth.

Haruna is set to assume office on Monday, November 4, 2025, ushering in a new era of leadership for FUEK.

Stakeholders anticipate that his tenure will accelerate the university's development, enhancing teacher education and contributing to Nigeria's educational landscape amid the nation's push for knowledge-driven progress.
