Edo asks ex-deputy governor to return state assets or face arrest

The Edo government has issued a one-week ultimatum to Godwin Omobayo to return all government assets in his possession.

Omobayo served as deputy governor of Edo during Godwin Obaseki’s second term, following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu in 2024.

A statement on Tuesday by Fred Itua, chief press secretary to Monday Okpebholo, the Edo governor, said Omobayo had ignored repeated requests to hand over official property used during his “illegitimate” tenure.

He added that the items include vehicles, documents and other state-owned assets.

“The continued retention of such property by any individual constitutes a breach of public trust and unlawful possession of government assets,” the statement reads.

“Mr Omobayo is hereby given a period of seven (7) days from the date of this release to comply fully by returning all government property under his custody to the office of the Secretary to the State Government.

“Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the government to direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to effect his arrest and ensure the immediate recovery of all state assets still in his possession through lawful means.”

The spokesperson reaffirmed his principal’s administration’s commitment to accountability and discipline in public service.

“No individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, will be allowed to retain property belonging to the people of Edo State,” he said.

Itua added that Okpebholo’s administration would continue to uphold transparency and integrity in governance.

The Edo governor also urged Omobayo to obey the directive and avoid actions that could lead to embarrassment or legal consequences.
