Burkina Faso Rejects U.S. Deportation Plan, Slams Proposal as ‘Indecent’

Burkina Faso’s junta-led government has rebuffed a U.S. proposal to accept individuals deported from the United States, denouncing the request as an affront to its dignity and a violation of its principles.

The refusal, announced late Thursday by Foreign Affairs Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore, marks a bold stand against one of President Donald Trump’s key immigration policies, which involves deporting people to third countries, often with no prior connection to those nations.

Traore, speaking on national television, described the U.S. proposal as “indecent” and contrary to Burkina Faso’s commitment to dignity.

“Burkina Faso is a destination, not a place of expulsion,” he declared, questioning whether the move was an attempt to pressure or blackmail the country.

Earlier that day, the U.S. embassy in Ouagadougou announced it would suspend most visa services for Burkinabe citizens, redirecting them to Lome, Togo.

Since Trump’s return to the White House, his administration has intensified its immigration crackdown, with countries like Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and South Sudan agreeing to accept U.S. deportees.

Burkina Faso’s refusal indicates its anti-Western stance under Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a September 2022 coup.

Positioning himself as an anti-imperialist Pan-African leader, Traore has distanced the country from former colonial power France and deepened ties with Russia.

The rejection highlights Burkina Faso’s determination to assert its sovereignty amid growing tensions with the U.S., further complicating Washington’s deportation strategy.
