The family of the late Bilyaminu Ahmed Bello has fiercely denounced the presidential pardon granted to Maryam Sanda, convicted of his murder, calling it “the worst possible injustice” that has “reopened our healing wounds.”
The outcry follows Sanda’s inclusion among 175 inmates granted clemency under the Federal Government’s prerogative of mercy.
In a statement signed by Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed (OFR), the family expressed outrage over the decision.
Sanda was convicted by the FCT High Court on January 27, 2020, for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, on November 19, 2017.
Her death sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2020 and affirmed by the Supreme Court on October 27, 2023.
The family condemned the pardon as an affront to justice, stating, “To have Maryam Sanda walk free, as if her heinous crime was trivial, is an unbearable injustice for any family mourning a loved one.”
They criticized the clemency, reportedly influenced by appeals from Sanda’s family and sympathy for her two children, as misguided.
“Sanda denied those same children a father’s love and care,” the statement noted, rejecting the justification for her release.
The Bello family accused the government of “appeasing” Sanda’s relatives while disregarding the victim’s memory and their enduring pain.
They vowed to seek solace in divine justice, asserting, “Ultimate and comprehensive justice rests with the Supreme Judge and our Creator.”
The controversial pardon has sparked public debate, with the Bello family’s statement amplifying calls for transparency in Nigeria’s clemency process.
