Bauchi North Senator Defects from PDP to APC

Senator Samaila Dahuwa Kaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during Tuesday's Senate plenary session.

The announcement, made via a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, marks a significant blow to the opposition PDP and strengthens the APC's hold, securing a two-thirds majority in the upper chamber for the first time.

Kaila, who resigned from the PDP on October 6 citing "incessant internal squabbles and factionalisation" that hindered his legislative duties, described the move as the result of extensive consultations with political leaders, stakeholders, and constituents.

In his letter, read on the Senate floor, he praised President Bola Tinubu's reforms and expressed optimism about aligning with the APC's "strategic direction" to better serve his district's interests.

The defection follows earlier resistance from a Bauchi APC faction, which on October 10 urged the party to reject Kaila's bid due to his "underwhelming" PDP track record and perceived self-interest.

Despite this, the APC welcomed him, with the move immediately tipping the party's Senate strength to the required 73 seats for overriding presidential vetoes and advancing key legislation unhindered.

Kaila, a former Bauchi State Commissioner for Health under Governor Bala Mohammed, assured constituents of his continued commitment to effective representation.

PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba confirmed the party's awareness but declined immediate comment, noting ongoing internal reconciliation efforts.

The APC National Secretariat hailed the development as a "vote of confidence" in Tinubu's administration amid preparations for the 2027 elections.
