APC Set to Dominate 30 States by 2027, Says PGF Director-General

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to expand its political stronghold from 24 to at least 30 states before the end of 2027, according to Mr. Folorunso Aluko, Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).

Speaking at the PGF’s Quarterly Strategy Meeting of Information Commissioners from APC-led states, held Thursday in Maiduguri, Borno State, Aluko outlined an ambitious plan to bolster the party’s dominance in Nigeria’s political landscape, aligning state-level governance with the federal vision under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Addressing a room of party loyalists and state communication chiefs, Aluko described the PGF as the “nerve centre of coordination for Nigeria’s subnational communication system.”

He emphasized the party’s strategic efforts to unify its messaging and amplify its impact ahead of the 2027 general elections. “We are strengthening our strategic posture and aligning every message with measurable impact,” Aluko declared.

“By the grace of God and the will of Nigerians, we are confident that the PGF will rise from today’s 24 states to at least 30 states before the end of 2027.”

The bold projection hinges on the APC’s ongoing efforts to woo governors from opposition parties, particularly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), amid Nigeria’s fluid political alliances.

While Aluko did not name specific governors or states, analysts point to recent defections—such as those of former PDP stalwarts in Cross River and Zamfara—as a blueprint for the APC’s expansion strategy.

The party’s current control of 24 states, including key northern strongholds like Borno and southern economic hubs like Lagos, gives it a formidable base to negotiate from.“Governance is a relay, not an ordinary race,” Aluko said, invoking a metaphor of collective effort.

“Each of us holds a baton in the long journey of nation-building.” He urged APC state officials to align their policies and messaging with the federal government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, emphasizing integrity and unified action.

The Maiduguri meeting, hosted in a state that has been a bastion of APC support despite security challenges, served as a symbolic backdrop for the party’s optimistic outlook.Aluko’s remarks come at a time of heightened political maneuvering, with the 2027 elections already casting a long shadow.

The APC’s dominance in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states gives it a significant edge, but the goal of securing six additional states faces hurdles. Political observers note that opposition strongholds like Rivers, Anambra, and Enugu remain resistant, with governors like Siminalayi Fubara (PDP) and Chukwuma Soludo (APGA) unlikely to defect without significant incentives.

Moreover, recent economic challenges and public discontent over fuel subsidy removal could complicate the APC’s narrative of progress.

Still, Aluko’s confidence resonated with attendees, who clapped enthusiastically as he reiterated the party’s commitment to prosperity and unity.

“Our states will increase in number, and our people will prosper,” he said, framing the APC’s growth as both a political and moral imperative.

The PGF, which serves as a coordinating body for APC governors, has been instrumental in driving policy alignment, from infrastructure projects to counter-terrorism efforts in the northeast.

As the meeting concluded, Aluko called for a reaffirmation of “shared resolve to speak with one voice and serve with renewed hope.”

Whether the APC can translate this ambition into reality will depend on its ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political terrain, where loyalty shifts and voter sentiment can upend even the best-laid plans.

For now, the party’s sights are set on 2027, with Maiduguri’s dusty streets marking the launchpad for a bold bid to reshape Nigeria’s political map.
