The All Progressives Congress (APC) has enthusiastically embraced the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah from his previous party, describing the move as a "courageous decision" that will supercharge development and good governance in the southeastern state.
Governor Mbah, who has been in office since May 2023, formally announced his switch to the APC during a press conference in Enugu on Monday, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the state's progress.
Flanked by key stakeholders and supporters, Mbah emphasized that the decision stems from a strategic vision to forge stronger partnerships at the national level.
"This is driven by a desire to foster a visionary partnership capable of delivering transformative progress for both the state and the nation," Mbah stated.
He expressed optimism that aligning with the APC would unlock broader avenues for collaboration, positioning Enugu as a pivotal player in Nigeria's economic renaissance.
In a swift response, the APC's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, issued an official statement celebrating Mbah's arrival alongside other defecting members, leaders, and stakeholders from Enugu.
Morka praised the governor's track record, noting his recent accolades, including the 2025 Presidential GovTech Awards for pioneering innovation and technology in public service delivery.
"We congratulate Governor Mbah for his courageous decision to join Nigeria’s preeminent and progressive Party," Morka said.
"We are confident that this definite political move will consolidate and accelerate development and good governance in Enugu State."
The APC highlighted how Mbah's integration into the party would amplify his leadership achievements and synchronize Enugu's initiatives with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the statement, the defection is poised to "bolster Governor Mbah’s impressive record" and transform Enugu into a "strategic partner, participant, and beneficiary" of the federal government's sweeping economic reforms.
This alignment, the party argued, would yield tangible benefits not just for Enugu's residents but for the broader South-East region, fostering prosperity through enhanced infrastructure, technology-driven services, and inclusive growth.
Mbah's defection marks a significant shift in Enugu's political landscape, where the APC has long sought to expand its influence amid the Labour Party's hold on the state following the 2023 elections.
The governor, a Harvard-trained lawyer and former banker, rode to victory on the Labour Party ticket with promises of water supply restoration, urban renewal, and economic diversification—pledges that have earned him both praise and scrutiny.
