Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, citing a recent World Bank report that reveals a sharp rise in poverty levels in Nigeria.
According to the report released on October 8, 2025, 139 million Nigerians are now living below the poverty line, a significant jump from 87 million in 2023 when President Bola Tinubu took office.
This indicates that over 50 million Nigerians have been plunged into poverty within just two years under the APC administration.Obi described the figures as a “heartbreaking reflection” of Nigeria’s failure to uplift its citizens, emphasizing that the government’s response has been inadequate.
Instead of sparking an urgent national dialogue to address the crisis, Obi noted that the government issued a rebuttal, despite the report mirroring the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
The World Bank further highlighted Nigeria’s position as the world’s most poverty-stricken nation, with poverty levels rising despite the government’s widely publicized economic reforms.
Obi attributed the failure of these reforms to a lack of clear planning and a focus on consumption rather than production. He called for deliberate, people-centered policies that prioritize support for small businesses, farmers, education, and healthcare to drive inclusive growth and reduce poverty.
"No nation can truly rise when the majority of its people are trapped in poverty,” Obi stated, urging for leadership that ensures Nigeria works for all its citizens.
He stressed the need for reforms backed by actionable strategies to channel resources into productive sectors that directly improve the lives of Nigerians.
The statement has reignited debates about the effectiveness of the APC’s economic policies, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over worsening living conditions amid rising inflation and unemployment.
